Doing Density
Better

Additional housing and density are needed across Sydney. But density done well requires real planning — not targets imposed without infrastructure, consultation or genuine affordability.

Doing Density Better is an alliance of NSW community action groups established as a Working Group of the Better Planning Network Inc. Formed in response to NSW Government planning changes — including TOD rezonings, Low and Mid-Rise Housing provisions, and the State Significant Development pathway — which are overriding local planning controls and producing housing outcomes that are neither affordable nor liveable.

Our key priorities
Planning that puts people first
01

Plan Density Well

Recognise the need for well-planned additional density and more affordable housing across Sydney for social and environmental benefits.

02

Prioritise Infrastructure

Density must be linked to parks, schools, trees, hospitals and public transport. Infrastructure comes first — not as an afterthought.

03

Prevent Net Housing Loss

No development should reduce dwelling numbers or affordability, nor replace studios and one-bedroom units with larger luxury apartments.

04

Deliver Affordable Housing

Affordable housing must be genuinely affordable and permanent — not provisions that expire after 15 years and revert to the private market.

05

Enhance Liveability & Sustainability

Protect local amenity and character. Encourage renovation and adaptive re-use over demolition.

06

Protect Environment & Heritage

Conserve built heritage, tree canopy, biodiversity and the natural environment when increasing diversity.

07

Suspend LMR

Suspend Low and Mid-Rise rezoning to allow communities and councils to work towards density that benefits everyone.

08

Stop SSD for Apartments

Residential apartments must not proceed through the State Significant Development pathway. Restore local consent authority.

Write to your local member

The single most effective action you can take is to write to your state MP. A personal letter from a constituent carries far more weight than a petition.
